The VAB and STS-133

The VAB is the closest to the pad anyone can physically be at launch time. Even the launch support crew drive back to the VAB before final countdown begins.

It takes a few seconds for the shockwave to hit – when it does you can feel it in your bones. The whole roof of the building feels like jello and the only sound you can hear is a loud crackling thunder.
